Randeep Hooda Opens Up About Being Sidelined During Highway Promotions: “I Didn’t Understand Ranbir Kapoor Role Either”

Randeep Hooda, who is currently basking in the success of his latest release Jaat alongside Sunny Deol, recently got candid about a bittersweet chapter from his past—one that left him confused and a little hurt.

During a conversation with journalist Shubhankar Mishra on his popular YouTube podcast, Randeep reflected on the time he was largely excluded from the promotions of Highway (2014)—the critically acclaimed road drama starring Alia Bhatt and directed by Imtiaz Ali.

“Ranbir Kapoor? I Didn’t Understand His Involvement Either”

Despite playing the pivotal role of Mahabir Bhati, a character central to the emotional weight of Highway, Randeep said he was barely visible in the film’s promotional activities. What baffled him more was seeing Ranbir Kapoor, who wasn’t even in the film, appear in its marketing efforts.

“Maine bhi voh dekha aur mujhe bhi samajh nahi aaya Ranbir Kapoor ka iss picture se kya lena dena hai,” Randeep remarked.

Ranbir, who was reportedly dating Alia Bhatt around that time, may have appeared as a show of support—but the move left Randeep questioning the strategy behind sidelining a core cast member.

Taking the High Road

Still, Randeep chose to look at the brighter side, saying:

“Maybe that’s when their love story began, and if that moment brought them together, then I’m happy for them. I wish them all the best.”

The actor acknowledged that the marketing strategy may have been centered around Alia, especially since the film dealt with female exploitation and trauma, and resonated with women-centric narratives.

“Shayad unki strategy shuru se thi ki Alia ke around karenge… Par jab film logon tak pohochhi, unko laga ki agar Mahabir Bhati nahi hota uss picture mein, toh picture waise nahi pakad paati.”

A Look Back at Highway

Released in 2014, Highway marked a turning point for Alia Bhatt’s career and showcased Imtiaz Ali’s signature storytelling. The film received widespread acclaim, particularly for its emotional depth and unique treatment of trauma and redemption.

Despite being critically applauded for his intense portrayal, Randeep’s absence from the spotlight during that phase may have cost him opportunities at the time.

What’s Next for Randeep Hooda?

Now, Randeep is enjoying a strong comeback. His portrayal of Ranatunga, the menacing villain in Jaat, has drawn praise from both fans and critics—even though the film itself received mixed reviews.

Earlier this year, he also garnered attention for his performance as Vinayak Damodar Savarkar in Swatantrya Veer Savarkar, proving once again that he’s one of Bollywood’s most versatile performers.
