Kolkata: A dramatic standoff unfolded at Jadavpur University on Saturday as a student protest turned violent, leaving West Bengal Education Minister Bratya Basu injured. Members of SFI (Students’ Federation of India) and AISA (All India Students’ Association), demanding student union election dates, gheraoed the minister, vandalized his vehicle, and blocked his exit for nearly two hours.
Student Protest Escalates into Violence
Tensions flared even before Bratya Basu arrived on campus, with students raising slogans and pressing for immediate elections. The situation intensified into a physical altercation when officials from the West Bengal College and University Professors’ Association (WBCUPA) attempted to disperse the demonstrators.
Eyewitnesses reported severe vandalism, with protesters smashing the minister’s car windshield, placing shoes on the vehicle, and scrawling the word ‘broker’ across its surface.
Minister Sustains Injuries, Rushed to Hospital
As the protest spiraled out of control, Basu was confined within the university premises for nearly two hours. He later experienced uneasiness and sustained injuries from shattered glass fragments, leading to his hospitalization at SSKM Hospital.
“I underwent an X-ray test after experiencing chest pain, but doctors confirmed there were no serious injuries. However, I have external marks and minor cuts from the glass shards,” Basu informed reporters after being discharged.
Basu Alleges “Political Conspiracy” Behind Attack
Speaking to the media, Basu condemned the attack, stating that while he attempted to engage in a discussion with student representatives, the protest quickly escalated into violence and lawlessness.
“I was ready to speak to five representatives in the presence of the Vice-Chancellor, but they were not interested in dialogue. Instead, they resorted to violence and tried to attack my vehicle,” he said.
The minister also suggested a “political conspiracy”, claiming that right-wing and ultra-left groups had joined forces to destabilize Jadavpur University.
Scenes of Bloodshed and Security Reinforcement
According to sources, one student was severely beaten during the chaos, leading to scenes of bloodshed on campus. In response to the escalating violence, security forces were deployed to restore order.
The situation worsened further when protesters deflated the minister’s vehicle tyres, blocking his exit and forcing him to remain confined for an extended period.
What Next?
The incident at Jadavpur University has once again sparked concerns over campus safety and student unrest in West Bengal. The government is expected to take stringent measures, while opposition parties are likely to escalate their stance on student elections and democratic rights on campuses.
As tensions remain high, all eyes are now on the state government’s next move regarding student elections and security arrangements for public officials visiting educational institutions.
