Sunil Chhetri Shines on Comeback as India Defeats Maldives 3-0 in Friendly

In a much-needed triumph, India defeated Maldives 3-0 in an international friendly on Wednesday, marking their first win in 16 months. The match was particularly special as Sunil Chhetri, who came out of retirement earlier this month, found the back of the net on his return to the national side.

The game, held in Shillong, saw India break their 12-match winless streak that had stretched since November 2023. Under head coach Manolo Marquez, this was India’s first victory, adding momentum ahead of their crucial AFC Asian Cup qualifier against Bangladesh on March 25.

The match began with a determined Indian side pressing forward. Rahul Bheke opened the scoring in the 35th minute, setting the tone for the home team. India doubled their lead in the 66th minute, with Liston Colaco finding the net. However, the highlight of the match was Sunil Chhetri’s goal in the 77th minute. The veteran striker, playing his first game since his international retirement in May last year, scored a classic glancing header, bringing his international goal tally to 95.

Chhetri had an earlier chance in the 47th minute, but the Maldives goalkeeper denied him. Nevertheless, he made no mistake with his next opportunity, much to the delight of the fans. He was substituted in the 82nd minute, receiving a standing ovation for his performance.

For India, this win comes as a major confidence booster ahead of their 2027 AFC Asian Cup qualifying campaign. The team had struggled in recent months, with Marquez’s tenure beginning with three draws and one loss before this breakthrough victory.

The Maldives, ranked 162nd in FIFA rankings, were outplayed by India, who are placed 36 spots higher at 126. While the opposition did show occasional attacking intent, the Indian defense remained solid throughout the game.

With this victory, India now shifts its focus to the all-important qualifier against Bangladesh, where Chhetri’s presence and leadership will be crucial. The 40-year-old’s return has already lifted the team’s morale, and his experience will be vital as India aims to secure a spot in the AFC Asian Cup 2027.
